Associate Scientist 1

The Process Chemistry team is seeking an Associate Scientist to be a be part of an innovative Chemistry group with responsibilities including (but not limited to) the design, synthesis, and purification of novel compounds for use in clean beauty, health, specialty and performance chemicals, applications. The Associate Scientist will work in teams to develop, implement, and perform organic reactions, including troubleshooting of synthetic routes and reactions, scouting of new synthetic routes, and performing high difficulty synthetic chemistry. This individual will help with structural determinations using NMR and other analytical methods and purify compounds using a variety of techniques.

A successful candidate will be responsible for performing chemical syntheses, purification processes and rigorous documentation under the supervision of scientists, and engineers. Strong communication skills are necessary for a team environment and working closely with cross functional teams. Collaboration is key to successfully moving projects forward with safety as a priority for all Process Development activities.
Responsibilities:
Personally responsible for individual as well as co-worker safety and maintaining safety as the highest priority by supporting and reinforcing procedures and policies
Synthesize target molecules using fermentation-derived starting materials
Purify target molecules and impurities using chromatography and other purification methods
Help with the characterization of compounds using modern analytical methods
Follow SOPs and document observable data as well as analytical data
Hands-on performance of laboratory experiments, sample preparation and sample submission
Training on laboratory equipment and perform equipment modifications when necessary
Generate predictive, actionable data to develop processes and prepare reports
Meet deliverables within specifications and timelines
Required Qualifications:
Derivatization of compound using simple chemistry
Perform structural characterization of isolated molecules
Experience with hazardous chemicals and safety assessment using MSDS’s
Team-oriented
Energetic and self-motivated, able to communicate effectively

Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Chemistry or related discipline, relevant industry experience is a plus
Experience in laboratory setting, conducting chemical synthesis and purification of natural products and other molecules is a plus
