Senior Formulation Scientist

The Senior Formulation Scientist is directly responsible for the design and execution of all formulation and formula characterization activities in support of the development and marketing of both existing and newly developed ingredients for Beauty & Personal Care.
Design and execute experiments to evaluate the functional performance and aesthetic attributes of new ingredients candidates
Work closely with the Sales & Marketing teams to design and characterize formulations to showcase the performance benefits of portfolio ingredients and assist with the preparation of technical marketing materials
Lead advanced formulations team to drive formula simplification, chassis development, and maximize utilization and application of Amyris portfolio ingredients and ingredients in development
Oversee all day-to-day formulation activities for the Center for New Product Innovation
MSc or PhD (preferred) degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related discipline
A minimum of 5 and preferably 10 years’ practical experience formulating consumer formulations for either a leading B2C cosmetic brand or contract manufacturer and/or raw cosmetic ingredient supplier
A deep understanding of the structure-performance relationships driving the application of cosmetic ingredients combined with practical experience of formulating a wide variety of product types and formats
Broad knowledge of the cosmetic raw ingredients market, including key suppliers, benchmark ingredient for specific applications, pricing, and human/environmental safety concerns
Keen awareness of key consumer and market trends in Beauty & Personal Care, specifically in the area of Clean and Sustainable Beauty. Practical experience in the Clean Beauty space is a big plus
A proven track record of leading the development of innovative consumer formulations and/or novel raw ingredients
A proven record of both technical leadership and effective people management with at least 2 years’ experience of managing one or more direct reports
Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment
Ability to drive continuous improvement
Absolute integrity and the use of good judgment to handle the confidential nature of duties, tasks and information
Ability to lead a team that processes a high volume with accuracy
Good time management skills, ability to meet critical deadlines
Strong communication skills both verbal and written
Strong customer service orientation and ability to successfully deal with employee and vendors
