Senior Scientist – Fermentation Process Development

The Process Development team is seeking a Senior Scientist with significant experience developing and optimizing early-stage and late-stage microbial fermentation processes for the production of small molecules and proteins. We are specifically seeking an energetic, creative, and highly self-motivated individual that enjoys challenges in fermentation development.

This individual should be an expert in fermentation science and process control and have a strong understanding of microbial physiology and biosynthetic pathways. This individual will be responsible for all aspects of optimization of strain performance and the development of the fermentation process for a given molecule in terms of strategies used, prioritization, and scale-up to pilot and manufacturing scale.

We expect this individual to also lead projects and be accountable for their success while communicating effectively with all stakeholders. The successful candidate will also interact closely with molecular biologists, other fermentation scientists, and downstream chemists and engineers.
Optimize fermentation processes and apply new process technologies and strategies when relevant for the production of small molecules and proteins
Lead efforts to design and analyze fermentation experiments to maximize understanding and performance of strains and meet project goals for yield, productivity, purity specifications, product stability, and other critical process parameters
Develop project plans and prioritize work for optimizing strain performance to meet project goals and scaling-up to a manufacturing site. Accountable for requesting resources and reaching milestones
Lead fermentation technology transfer to the pilot plant and manufacturing sites around the globe
Lead cross-functional project teams that are focused on the commercialization of a given molecule and includes the development and technology transfer of processes from laboratory scale, pilot scale, manufacturing scale
Mentor and possibly supervise associate scientists, scientists, and engineers
Collaborate with:
Operations team and fellow process development scientists to ensure that experiments are designed and executed effectively
Pilot plant and manufacturing teams to ensure successful technology transfer
Molecular biologists to understand the impact of genetic changes on strain performance
Analytical chemists to ensure that analytical methods are robust
Communicate with internal and external stakeholders through meetings and clearly written emails, reports and presentations
Responsible for individual and co-worker safety and maintain safety as the highest priority by supporting and reinforcing procedures and policies
Required Qualifications:
Requires a BS in Chemical/Bio-Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience
Requires strong experience designing and analyzing microbial fermentation experiments for strain screening and/or scale-up
Requires excellent troubleshooting skills for microbial fermentation processes and process control in the lab and at the industrial scale
Requires excellent time management and prioritization skills due to the fast-paced environment and the need to balance multiple projects
Experience using tools and software to analyze large datasets and provide statistical analysis
Strong project management, organization, facilitation, problem solving, and quantitative analysis skills are critical
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are an essential characteristic of a successful candidate due to the highly collaborative nature of the position
Ability to deliver clear, compelling and effective technical presentations to colleagues and managers
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer PhD with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or MS with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
Experience with small molecules that are produced during fermentation as a gas, solid, or liquid is preferred
Experience with proteins that are produced during microbial fermentation is a bonus
Experience using the design of experiment (DoE) methodology for the optimization and characterization of fermentation processes high desired
