We believe that developing a robust protein production pipeline will be instrumental in the next phase of Ansa’s goal of implementing the fastest, cleanest, and most accurate DNA synthesis system in the world. As the Lead Scientist of the Protein Production team, you will level up the established research-scale protein production systems to a manufacturing scale. The perfect candidate will have managed scale up of fermentations, specifically for protein production purposes. You’ll oversee the scaling transition, build a team to support the work, establish tools, systems and protocols to increase production of our key reagents.

Lead the scale-up of in-house and outsourced microbial protein expressions, taking the process from 2L to 30+L fermentations
Lead the scale-up of our protein purification from <1g to >10g batches of high quality, pure protein
Set metrics and develop systems to comparatively evaluate protein production, purity and cost to support internal operations and drive the management of CROs
Use experienced judgment to guide decision making regarding pipeline development as it relates to cost-benefit analysis, operational and technical capabilities
Being a team leader: provide guidance and career development to an interdisciplinary team of protein engineers. Assist your fellow scientists with constructive criticism and feedback.

PhD in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent or Bachelor’s/Master’s with 5-10+ years of industry experience
5-10 years experience in microbial fermentation in E. coli, including scales over 30L
5-10 years experience with protein production
Experience with protein purification at >10g scale a huge plus
Experience with microbial expression systems utilizing secretion (e.g. yeast, B. subtilis) is a plus
Experience managing projects at CROs a plus
Experience with DNA-binding proteins a plus
Enthusiasm to learn new techniques and curiosity to explore new areas of biology
