Surface Chemist

Bionano Genomics consumables team is seeking a chemist to explore novel surface modifications and bioconjugation methods to afford enhanced wettability and enzyme attachments for manufacturing development and applications. The candidate will work alongside our assay team, build, and test chemical attachment approaches for enzymes and design, develop and troubleshoot assays, chemistry and methods for monitoring interactions between molecules/biomolecules and polymeric materials on surfaces. 

The candidate will be responsible for developing attachment and surface modification chemistry, analyzing resulting enzyme-support structures, and will collaborate with our assay team to scale the attachment chemistry. The successful candidate will also accurately record and summarize data, communicate key findings to the relevant stakeholders and contribute to writing of progress reports and patents, and keep abreast of the most recent advances in technology and strive to improve Bionano Genomics novel immobilization strategies. 


  • A MS/PhD in chemistry or biochemistry with +2 years of industry or post-doc experience. 
  • Hands-on experience in one or more of the following disciplines: surface chemistry, surface modifications, polymer chemistry, bio-conjugation, organic or synthetic chemistry.
  • Experience in surface modification and click chemistry is required. 
  • Experience in enzyme catalysis is required.
  • Experience in analytical techniques for surface reactions such as fluorescence microscopy, FRET, qPCR, IR, FTIR, etc. highly desired. 
  • Experience in protein immobilization is a plus. 
  • Experience in continuous manufacturing is a plus. 
  • A working knowledge of enzyme kinetics is a plus. 
  • Experience with photochemistry is a plus. 
  • Experience in multi-step chemical reactions and reaction workups. 
  • Knowledge of key chemical transformations. 
  • Can propose synthetic pathways to create desired compounds with sound retrosynthetic capabilities. 
  • Evidence of achievement and innovation through an excellent academic track record, publications, and patents.
