What You Will Achieve

This position will reside within the Global Pathology (GP) group in Drug Safety R&D (DSRD). Digital pathology is a new field with tremendous growth opportunities and is of strategic interest to DSRD GP. We are seeking a motivated Scientist to perform whole-slide, digital image analysis (DIA) to quantify protein and nucleic acid targets that have been labeled in tissue sections using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) methods, respectively.


The ideal candidate will have experience quantifying targets labeled using immunofluorescence (IF) approaches, including multiplex IF, and will also have hands-on experience using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) tools to create algorithms to quantify morphological features in histopathological images or to supplement conventional DIA methods. Responsibilities will include scanning glass slides using whole slide digital scanning instruments. The candidate must be able to work independently and collaborate with GP team members, while having strong organizational and communication skills to foster effective collaborations with pathologists and research unit (RU) scientists on project teams.


This position is site agnostic, and may be located in La Jolla CA, Groton CT, or Cambridge MA.


How You Will Achieve It

Run established DIA algorithms using commercial and open-source image analysis software packages to quantify target expression in support of investigative studies
Develop custom ML/DL DIA algorithms to support portfolio studies using commercial image analysis software
Independently analyze and interpret the data, perform statistical analysis of DIA endpoints, generate reports for internal teams and complete the studies in a timely manner
Present data to key project stakeholders within and outside of the organization
Perform whole-slide scanning of glass microscope slides into a virtual image archive using digital scanners
Follow established operating procedures, maintain electronic/paper lab notebooks and imaging data and QC documents
Perform all regulatory responsibilities in compliance with applicable regulatory standards including Good Laboratory Practices and animal welfare regulations



Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, or related field with minimum 4 years of relevant DIA experience OR Master’s degree with minimum 2 years of relevant DIA experience.
Experience using one or more image analysis software packages, such as Visiopharm, HALO, inForm, Definiens, QuPath or Cell-Profiler.
2 years of programming experience in any of the following languages: MATLAB, C/C++, Python or R.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to interact, contribute, and communicate effectively with the team.


Experience using commercial ML/DL modules to supplement DIA algorithm development.
Experience with DIA of multiplex IF or IHC assays.
Experience with developing AI/DL algorithms using Python/R.
Image processing domain knowledge: segmentation, classification, feature selection/extraction.
Experience with whole slide scanning process and instruments (Leica AT2 and GT450, Zeiss Axioscan).
