The Balch lab is at the forefront of exciting new developments of genetic disease therapeutics.
Position Title: Staff Scientist
Position Summary:
The genomics-oriented cell biology laboratory of Dr. William Balch in the Department of Molecular Medicine at Scripps Research in San Diego, CA has an opening for a Staff Scientist to perform and guide laboratory efforts. The Balch laboratory is interested in understanding and treating the underlying basis of mono- and polygenic diseases impacting the protein fold in response to genetic variation in the human population. Candidates will contribute to the development and application of novel experimental/computational approaches to assess the impact of genetic variation and the protein folding machinery on genetic diversity for different gene targets affecting liver, lung, and neurodegenerative disease. For examples of current efforts see recent publications (https://www.scripps.edu/faculty/balch/).
Skillsets of interest include proven expertise in tissue culture, biochemical tools (SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting, ELISA, etc.), cell biological tools including imaging, and a working knowledge of molecular techniques including generation of mutant plasmids, transfection with plasmids/siRNA for transient protein expression in cell-based reporter systems. Knowledge of higher throughput assay formats (96/384 well) as well as computational tools including machine learning/bioinformatics are considered a plus. Contact: webalch@scripps.edu.
