POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Buyer will have experience in all procurement categories, with a deep experience in capital and small lab equipment, supplies, and service contracts. Responsible for drafting, collaborating, and negotiating contracts to execution and ensure compliance with the contracts. Responsible for functions that include strategic sourcing and supplier lifecycle management.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Collaborates cross-functionally with various internal stakeholders and externally with suppliers. 
Anticipates and communicates potential problems and quickly develop and execute mitigation plan.
Leads and performs RFI / RFP activities to optimize spend and support research programs. Negotiates pricing and terms for capital equipment, lab equipment, lab supplies, and service agreements.
Consults or informs the appropriate stakeholders (such as EH&S, Facilities, IT, Lab Managers, Research Administration, and Legal) for relevant commodities or services as needed.
Manages supplier contract lifecycle and ensures contractual obligations are met.
Creates, maintains, and optimizes managed inventory programs to include coordination of material flows throughout product changes, obsolescence, and the introduction of new suppliers and/or materials.
Collaborates with suppliers to reduce costs, improve quality, control inventories, and ensure timely flow of material.
Manages and resolves issues regarding invoice discrepancies, returns and quality problems with suppliers.
Develops and implements optimization plans for under-performing and underutilized suppliers.
Analyzes current procedures and drives continuous improvement with Supply Chain, cross-functional stakeholders, and suppliers.
Ensures and promotes compliance to Scripps policies and Uniform Guidance.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, Logistics or a related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.
Minimum 5 years of experience in Scientific Procurement.
Solid understanding of supply chain, materials management and business management fundamentals as well as operations and enterprise economics.
Excellent organizational skills; ability to balance short term priorities.
Effective problem solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to foster good teamwork and collaboration, as well as maintain personal accountability and responsibility.
High level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness with strong work ethic and the ability to work independently with minimal direction.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, with advanced skills in Excel and database systems.
Proficient in the understanding and use of ERP systems.  WorkDay and Jaggaer SciQuest preferred.
Ability to influence others and manage conflict.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May include stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.  With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to lift and handle equipment or materials up to 20 pounds; as well as perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists and hands.
