POSITION SUMMARY

The Director, People & Culture will create and execute programs to attract, develop, and retain the best talent. The ideal candidate will have a combination of strong Human Resources (HR), Organizational Development and business acumen skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to thrive in a high growth environment. The Director, People & Culture helps to operationalize people and culture initiatives and serves as an advisor to business leaders regarding internal policies and processes (e.g., talent acquisition, performance management, talent development and total rewards) in order to optimize employee engagement and productivity. This individual will be responsible for managing company culture, talent acquisition, retention, performance management, talent management, total rewards, and employment law compliance.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reinforces company culture, core values and performance expectations.
Manages internal communications for the company to provide individuals the knowledge and tools to perform effectively in their roles.
Conducts periodic surveys to measure employee satisfaction and employee engagement, and creates action plans to address areas of opportunity.
Remains current with changes in human resource and employment law. Assures all employment policies and practices are fully compliant with all federal, state and local laws and regulations.  Works with management to ensure employees comply with all laws related to employee benefits, compensation, employment and training.
Establishes and communicates policies and procedures to support the strategic and operational needs of the organization, and acts as an advisor to leaders and employees to address questions or situations.
Establishes and leads the talent acquisition process to ensure candidates meet or exceed the identified competencies and performance expectations.
Creates and delivers a comprehensive onboarding program for new hires to set them up for success.
Determines and recommends employee relations practices necessary to promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.
Coaches and trains managers in their communication, feedback, recognition, and interaction responsibilities with the employees who report to them. Makes certain that managers know how to successfully, ethically, honestly, and legally communicate with employees.
Conducts investigations when employee complaints or concerns are brought forth. Consults with leadership and legal counsel as appropriate on complex personnel matters to appropriately mitigate risk.
Manages talent acquisition and comprehensive strategic recruiting plans, including branding, sourcing channels, screening, interviewing, assessments, diversity, data collection, job offers and metrics.
Develops staffing plans to identify talent within and outside the organization for positions of responsibility, creating developmental plans as appropriate.
Leads the implementation of the performance management system, and guides management to effectively manage performance, including completion of employee performance reviews, goal setting and coaching.
Develops progressive and proactive compensation and benefits programs to provide motivation, incentives and rewards for effective performance, and communicates information to maximize employee awareness and understanding of offerings. Manages benefit programs from a competitive and cost perspective.
Establishes the company wage and salary structure, pay policies, and oversees the variable pay systems within the company including bonuses and raises. Monitors all pay practices and systems for equity, effectiveness and cost containment.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business, or related field; and 7-10 years of progressive HR experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
SHRM-SCP and/or SPHR and PHR-CA certifications a plus.
Prior experience in biotech, in a start-up environment, and taking companies public is highly desirable.
Proficiency with Human Resource Information Systems and Applicant Tracking Systems is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with proven ability to collaborate, communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization.
Ability to maintain a broad view of the business, demonstrating strong diagnostic, problem solving and analytical skills, delivering solutions that balance individual and overall company needs.
Demonstrated success in synthesizing complex business data and developing innovative and holistic solutions from inception, implementation to post-delivery assessment.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage projects and lead change across the organization.
Ability to focus on critical issues and balance and respond to competing short-term and long-term priorities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

Work in and around common laboratory equipment.
The regular requirements of an office environment (computers, computer screens, workstations, etc.) apply when not working in or around a laboratory environment.
100% on-site work at corporate headquarters in San Diego, CA.
Evening and weekend work as necessary.
