POSITION TITLE:  Research Assistant I
The Schief Lab at Scripps Research is seeking a highly motivated and professional individual with an interest in vaccine research and development. The Research Assistant will be a contributing team member of high throughput protein production activities for research and development of vaccine candidates for multiple public health threats such as HIV/AIDS, SARS-CoV-2, Influenza and Ebola. Will be involved in laboratory work required to produce and analyze new research vaccine candidates. Lab activities include ELISA, protein purification by chromatography from mammalian and E. coli cells, protein concentration and biotinylation, DNA preparation, maintenance of cell lines, gel electrophoresis, as well as molecular biology methods such as PCR, library preparation, FACS analysis and other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned.  Will also perform multiple laboratory methods under minimal supervision, independently and in collaboration with others to meet common goals and will manage lab equipment and consumables as required or assigned.

 Work under general supervision. Assistance given for unusual problems and normally reviewed for application of sound professional judgement
Ability to independently conduct a wide variety of standard laboratory techniques/procedures. Some ability to use judgement when necessary to adapt standard methods and techniques. Receive instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions. 
May provide interpretation and initial analyses of results. 
Limited ability to troubleshoot and modify procedures. 
May assist in designing experiments to complete a segment of overall research plan.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained.
Requires 1-3 years experience. Candidates possessing a Master’s degree, 0-2 years experience required.
Candidate should be an excellent team player with effective verbal and written communication skills, must be self-motivated and highly organized with strong record-keeping skills. 
Prior hands-on working experience with ELISA, high-throughput protein production and protein biotinylation preferred. This position requires strong attention to detail and multiple periods of intense concentration. Familiarity with BSL-2 protocols and best-practices as well as proven problem solving and troubleshooting abilities is a plus.
This position works in a laboratory environment.

COMPENSATION: $20.07-$25.06 per hour
