We are currently looking to add a Senior Research Associate to our team in La Jolla, CA. 

The Senior Research Associate will support the forward genetics pipeline focused on generating, identifying, and characterizing algal mutants with improved photosynthetic efficiency, lipid productivity or other desirable phenotypes.  The successful candidate will have extensive experience in high throughput screening techniques, flow cytometry and photophysiology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Contribute to a team effort aimed at the isolation and characterization of algal mutants with enhanced photosynthetic or metabolic properties

·       Act as an independent user of FACS instruments.  Perform maintenance and troubleshooting as needed

·       Carefully set up and execute laboratory experiments to evaluate the growth and photophysiological characteristics of algae strains

·       Program, set up and monitor liquid handling robots to aid in microplate-based high throughput screening efforts

·       Utilize proper aseptic technique to cultivate and maintain algal cultures

·       Generate detailed and complete laboratory notebooks and research summaries; communicate data to internal groups through written and oral reports

·       Instruct and provide guidance to Research Associates

Knowledge and Abilities:

·       B.S. in  Molecular Biology, Phycology or related life-sciences field with 5-8 years of relevant experience in industrial or academic labs or M.S. degree with 2-3 years of relevant experience in industrial or academic labs

·       Hands-on, practical working knowledge of flow cytometry & FACS highly desirable

·       Experience working with eukaryotic algae or other microbial photoautotrophs is an advantage

·       Proven ability to budget time and manage several projects at once

·       Maintain high level of organization and attention to detail

·       Eagerness to learn, adopt, and develop new methods
